Project Description

Meet the Maj – Mary Murphy

It’s that time again!  We’re back with the next installment of Meet the Maj – where we chat with the people that make this incredible theatre what it is today.

Last month we kicked off with the talented and debonair Rod Waterworth, who set the bar so high we were all left wondering “how do we top that?”

The answer… Mary Murphy.

If Mary isn’t a national treasure just yet, she’s certainly a treasure of Her Majesty’s Theatre.

Mary first attended a production at HMT at age 3 (she thinks it was “The Mikado”) which sent her on a life-long love affair with the theatre. After studying singing and embarking on a successful career in television, Mary returned to the place it all started – performing on the Maj stage in productions of “Hello Dolly”, “Oliver!”, “Half a Sixpence” and “Mame”.

After a detour to the dizzying world of advertising Mary was once again lured back to HMT, establishing the archives department when Mike Walsh brought the theatre back in 1999, and maintaining it right through until this day.

Everyone enjoying our facebook posts over the last 6 months highlighting the amazing productions at HMT throughout the years can certainly attest to the amazing work Mary has done in preserving the theatre’s 131 year history.

Mary – we at HMT, and the Australian theatre industry as a whole, are indebted to you!
