Project Description

Dear Friends of the Maj – It’s our (belated) birthday!

On the 1st of October 1886, Her Majesty’s Theatre (then called the Alexandra Theatre) opened with its very first production – a “New and Original Farcical Comedy” entitled “Bad Lads”.

The show itself was met with mixed reviews, calling it “somewhat thin, not to say flimsy” and of one actor’s performance, “Mr George Leopold’s rendering of the character… would be still more acceptable if he would refrain from winking and grimacing at the audience”.

However, despite this, the new theatre was praised for its “elegant decorations and appointments” and its “electrical illumination”!

131 years later we are honoured to still be entertaining Australia and even though we’ve made a few changes to the building over the years we are still immensely proud of our elegant decorations and appointments and our electrical illumination.

As our very special guests and “Friends of the Maj” we’d like to thank you for your continuing support of Her Majesty’s Theatre. It’s because of the support of the community that we are able to continue doing what we do and providing a home for some of this country’s best productions (well, perhaps despite “Bad Lads”…)

So thank you! And please stay tuned to the Friends of the Maj over the coming months. As well as bringing you our usual great offers and keeping you informed of all the latest ticketing information, we will also be giving you a sneak peak into the history of this iconic venue, some of the artists who have performed here, and exclusive behind the scenes access.

Here’s to the next 131 years and we’ll see you at the theatre!

Receive special offers and discounts, competitions and be the first to know what’s going on at HMT.
